I wanted to learn about IMing for work. Honest! We would like to add this service at the Youth Help Desk. When looking at the public libraries that use this, there isn't any easy way to tell if they offer it to kids. I'm sure some teen departments do, but it could be interesting if we offer it and the person on the other end is in second grade. Have you ever watched a 2nd grader type? My only concern about adding IM to the Youth Help Desk is that I expect that the busiest in-person times of day/night would directly correspond to the busiest IM times--and we have times already when we can barely keep up. I can see that families might prefer it to the telephone, though.
Would I try IM at home? Well, if I had a computer I might. :)

Ask Away Illinois is a form of IM -- a very sophisticate chat. We do get young patrons -- sometimes their parents type for them. If you offer IM, you'll have to learn the lingo. . .but it would be a popular service. If you're going to do a survey, find out how many kids have IM access -- either via computer or via cell phone. I'm not sure the 2nd graders are all totally connected yet, but I'd be interested to hear about it.
